Tango Workshop in Ojai:  March 2015

On Monday, March 16 — Returning to Ojai ...

"Flirty Vals"

— 90-Minute Workshop + 30-Minute Supervised Práctica —

... followed by open dancing in Ojai's renowned "Tango Incident"

Monday - March 16, 2015     —    7:00 - 10:00 pm

All in the Gallery in the Ojai Art Center — $20 / Dancer

In her now legendary workshop "FLIRTY VALS," the masterful Brigitta Winkler will help us take direct aim at one of Tango's most delightful and enigmatic dances — the magic we create with the swirling 3/4 time of vals music.

Like our fellow humans and other bipeds, most tango dancers have a matching pair of two legs + feet, an anatomical feature that not only helps us walk, run, skip and jump, it also makes for a most elegant and brilliant "fit" with both the common 4/4 rhythm of tango music, and the steady 2/4 heartbeat pulse of milonga.

Ah, but when Time begins to divide itself into threes, we two-legged creatures are faced with a whole new set of options, ideas, and challenges — including several potential pitfalls — and — some of Tango's most sublime + scintillating possibilities.

... How best to find our way deep into the rotating heart of Whirlwind Vals and soar "over the rainbow" into the Magic Land beyond?

Find out for yourself by joining us in Ojai on March 16 for another illuminating evening with the astounding Brigitta Winkler of Berlin as she helps us "click our heels" three times in one of her most playful + revealing workshops, "FLIRTY VALS" ...

With nearly 35 years worth of background + experience in Tango, the iconic dancer, teacher + innovator Brigitta Winkler is celebrated world-wide for her vast knowledge + unparalleled insight into the form.

Last year, Brigitta's 2014 workshop in Ojai filled the room with dancers as we delved deep into the mysteries of expressive following + effortless leading ... and this year promises us even more of the same Rare Magic.

Be sure not to miss it ...

And after the "FLIRTY VALS" workshop and our Supervised Práctica with Brigitta ...

Please plan to stay on as we dim the lights + enjoy another hour of open dancing in Ojai's renowned "Tango Incident" — all in the same artful Gallery space ...

As always, in Ojai there's no need to pre-register or pay in advance — just come as you are ... bring a friend ... and be prepared to enjoy an unparalleled evening of Tango with the iconic Brigitta Winkler.

More About Brigitta Winkler

Brigitta with Tomás Howlin

Celebrated as a major figure of the modern Tango Renaissance, Brigitta Winkler relishes both tradition and innovation, and brings more than 30 years' experience to the dance floor.

She spent some years in Paris studying with Virulazo, a star of Tango Argentino. At that time she met Coco Orlando Diaz, and they began performing together at Les Trottoirs de Buenos Aires in Paris. In 1986, they toured to Montreal and Toronto.

Brigitta traveled often to Buenos Aires to study with such noted dancers as Juan Carlos Copes, Antonio Todaro, Pepito Avellaneda, Gustavo Naveira, and Eduardo Arquimbau. In 1987 she opened Tanzart with Angelika Fischer, where she hosted Arquimbau's visits to Berlin.

In 1994 Brigitta choreographed and danced in the Tango Marathon in the Theaterhaus Stuttgart and Tango Vision in the Podewil Berlin. In 1996, she was a co-founder of the influential all-women collective and performance group Tango Mujer.

These days, Brigitta travels widely and teaches regularly at major Tango Festivals throughout the United States, Germany, Italy and Russia, and in 2005 she opened her own Tangocenter called Phynix Tanzt in Berlin. She is spending January and February teaching and dancing in Honolulu and Maui, and, following her visit to Ojai, she will travel to the Bay Area, Albuquerque and Boston before returning to Europe in May.

“Brigitta always brings something new to her classes. Familiar topics are looked at with a different lens. It always amazes me on how after being in her classes I can work for months on precisely those things, feeling them fresh again !”

   — Fabienne Bongard — of Tango Mujer, formerly with Dance Manhattan, now dancing in
Los Angeles where she co-hosts the monthly Libertad + teaches at Oxygen Tango.

"Brigitta Winkler has deep tango wisdom and irresistible sparkle. Unique in the tango universe, Brigitta is an inspiring and playful teacher and a veritable treasure trove of tango fabulousness accumulated over her 30+ years of devotion to the dance form."

   — Sharna Fabiano — of Tango Mujer, formerly with Tango Mercurio in Washington, DC,
now in Los Angeles where she recently earned her MFA in Dance from UCLA. Sharna
and her partner Isaac Oboka both teach at Oxygen Tango.
